Stepping up to Success

Have you noticed that in business, and in life in general, there is only a small percentage that really make it to the top?

?In fact the statistics show that only five percent will really achieve all that they want,? said Jon Mailer, director of the National College of Business.

?For example,? he said, ?by the age of 65, 95 per cent of our population will be either dead or dependent on the pension or social security. ?Only Five per cent will be financially independent. ?Ninety-five per cent of small businesses that open are in some difficulty within four to five ears or even earlier, with only five per cent really making it to the top.? Mr Mailer believes the difference is that the five per cent make a decision about two things differently than the 95 per cent. First they continue to educate themselves.

Education does not necessarily mean more of the stuff that the learnt in school. It means learning about more exciting things such as communication, wealth creation, time management, business, sales, marketing, personal relationships and more, he said. ?It?s really the information that we don?t get taught at school that makes a difference in your life!? said Mr Mailer.

?The traditional schooling system teaches you enough to pass your grades, but life skills are things that many people need to grow and develop to their true potential.? ?No one taught me how to start a savings plan or the best communicators are the best listeners. ?It?s from reading books, magazines and doing extra courses that I learnt these skills.?

Mr Mailer said the second decision successful people made was to put themselves in an environment that made them grow and develop. ?It is surrounding themselves with positive people, who support their ideas and concepts that helps them make the steps ?up the mountain?. ?Our society today is full of the ?tall poppy syndrome? that pulls people down as soon as they start to make a move towards success.

?The key to avoiding this is to hang out with other successful people that want to pull you up with them along the way.?
