In this month's NCB Webinar How to get to the Top of Google in 2012, Jacqui Jones, Founder and Director of SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) and online services company Keyword Intent shared how Google changed its ranking model in 2011 and what we need to know to get the best possible search engine ranking this year.

Here are our 5 top tips and Google updates from the webinar that you can apply to your own business’ SEO:

  1. Remember the simple things: Although Google is constantly changing and adjusting for its users, the basics are still important when building your search visibility. These include the structure, hierarchy and navigation of your website as these help Google understand your site and tell the story of what you offer. It is also important to have simple URLs and descriptive text so both Google and its users understand what they will find through you.
  2. Have your own voice: Last year Google made some big changes to ensure websites that steal or primarily duplicate content from other sites and businesses are dropped from listings. This applies throughout your website, but is especially significant to blogs. Although it is AOK now and then to duplicate content (with the right referencing), the primary content on your website or blog should be your own. As well as building your ranking on Google, this will also present you as an industry leader for that topic or the industry as a whole.
  3. Keep it fresh: You may notice in Google rankings, the addition of time and date or how many hours ago each of the top listings were updated or posted. Although relevance to search terms is still number 1 on Google’s check list, they are now also considering how fresh or how recent the content was created. Obviously, the fresher the better, so remember to keep updating and adding to your website or blog to ensure Google sees you as a live source rather than stale and stagnant.
  4. Rich snippets: We’ve seen some changes to how the organic search listings are now displayed thanks to Google’s latest updates. You will now begin to see images and ratings added to the regular organic listing which currently includes a title link, description and your listed website. To be sure the images and descriptions you want displayed are coming up for your search terms, chat to your web developers.
  5. Check your user signals: Your user signals are important for both your own online measurement and Google’s judgement of your site. Some of the most significant signals that Google will judge are your click through rate, bounce rate and site speed. Google will be looking for ways to decide whether or not a user experience is good on your site and your results in these areas will contribute to that.
