A Bit About Darryl:
I am a proud Queenslander – love surfing, extreme sports, camping and touring. I was a Queensland Police Service Officer for 28 years with a successful career attaining the rank of Inspector. In 2000 I moved to USA for 8 years and worked in several large national companies and also a global company all in the field of risk management and business improvement strategies. In 2008 I returned [to Australia] and in March 2009 commenced my business – People Risk Management. Initially this business was focused on a service to SMEs but since December 2010, after successfully completing a course with National College of Business, a decision was made to transition to being a service to the Queensland Coal Mining industry on Risk Management. There are several services offered including risk assessment, incident/accident investigation, risk avoidance or minimisation and training of executive management to appreciate risk strategies utilisation to maximise productivity and training with safety and security staff to excellence not just compliance in WPH&S activities.
What is the best advice you’ve received during your career?
“If they are picking on you then they are leaving someone else alone.” Mr Jim Murtha (my dad)
“Just always get back up one more time than you are knocked down – don’t stay down – winners get back up.” Sir Richard Branson in Sydney 2010
Who is the number one person that inspires you in business – and why?
Sir Richard Branson – he is doing it with guts determination but also with belief passion and commitment to others. He is constantly doing good around the world and making a difference.
What are you reading at the moment, and what do you love to read on an ongoing basis?
- Have a New You by Friday by Dr Kevin Leman
- I belong to a monthly book club and always read those
- Anything by John C Maxwell on leadership (met him in USA several times)
- The Bible – the basis of any good book worth reading.
By the end of 2011 I’d love to…
I have 3 answers to this...
Be inspiring and enabling others particularly youth to fully utilise their gifts and talents to make a difference for others.
Always be seeking and responsive to opportunities of living a life of excellence and daring to dare always and now.
Have a centre of excellence in a new science known as People Risk Management when people do not live to a level of competence
